Det konstaterar f\u00f6rfattaren i brev till v\u00e4nnen och filosofen <a href=\"https:\/\/litteraturbanken.se\/f%C3%B6rfattare\/LarssonH\/titlar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hans Larsson<\/a> strax efter bokens utgivning. Bergman var redan fullt sysselsatt med  filmarbete tillsammans med regiss\u00f6ren Victor Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m. Deras nyligen inspelade <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.svenskfilmdatabas.se\/sv\/item\/?type=film&amp;itemid=3524\" target=\"_blank\">Vem d\u00f6mer \u2013<\/a><\/em>  skulle snart visas p\u00e5 landets biografer, och Bergman hade d\u00e4rtill ansvaret f\u00f6r filmnovellen med samma titel som skulle tryckas parallellt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dessutom var den p\u00e5 bristningsgr\u00e4nsen arbetstyngda f\u00f6rfattaren ansvarig f\u00f6r \u00f6vers\u00e4ttningen av historikern Guglielmo Ferreros stora arbete om romerska riket: <em>Rom. H\u00e4lst ville jag g\u00e5 fr\u00e5n alltsamman men si det l\u00e5ter sig inte g\u00f6ra\u201d, skrev Bergman i brev till sin mor Fredrique Bergman den 9 september.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skulle romanen bli till kr\u00e4vdes eftergifter. I Bergmans almanacka hittar man i anslutning till romanarbetets b\u00f6rjan personliga uppmaningar eller f\u00f6reskrifter: \u201dsista hippan\u201d f\u00f6ljt av \u201dsista groggen\u201d. Hjalmar Bergman hade ju under sin livstid l\u00e5tit dramatisera ett antal romaner, d\u00e4ribland <em>Hans n\u00e5ds testamente, <\/em>vilken skrevs direkt f\u00f6r radio p\u00e5 inr\u00e5dan av sv\u00e5gern Per Lindberg som d\u00e5 axlade ledarskapet f\u00f6r Radiotj\u00e4nsts teateravdelning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men n\u00e5gon dramatisering av <em>Farmor och V\u00e5r Herre <\/em>kom icke till st\u00e5nd s\u00e5 l\u00e4nge f\u00f6rfattaren sj\u00e4lv h\u00f6ll i pennan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planerna p\u00e5 pj\u00e4sen dr\u00f6jde till 1938, drygt sju \u00e5r efter Bergmans bortg\u00e5ng, d\u00e5 ett m\u00e4rkv\u00e4rdigt brev damp ner i \u00e4nkan Stina Bergmans brevinkast. Givetvis med Edith Evans i \u00e5tanke. I efterhand ber\u00e4ttade Stina Bergman om f\u00f6rloppet i <em>R\u00f6ster i radio<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dN\u00e4r manuskriptet blev f\u00e4rdigt och kom mig i h\u00e4nderna fick jag stark hj\u00e4rtklappning \u2013 innan jag ens l\u00e4st mer \u00e4n titeln. Det var s\u00e5 sp\u00e4nnande att se vad de b\u00e5da engelsm\u00e4nnen, far och son, hade gjort av romanen. Ju l\u00e4ngre jag l\u00e4ste, desto gladare blev jag och slutligen var jag s\u00e5 tacksam \u00f6ver resultatet att jag telegraferade till London och k\u00f6pte dramatiseringen f\u00f6r hela Europa p\u00e5 alla m\u00f6jliga spr\u00e5k. Och s\u00e5 satte jag mig ner och \u00f6versatte pj\u00e4sen tillbaka till svenska och det var inte sv\u00e5rt, eftersom engelsm\u00e4nnen f\u00f6ljt originalet s\u00e5 gott som ordagrant. 95 procent av replikerna var Hjalmars egna. De sm\u00e5 \u00e4ndringar som varit n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndiga f\u00f6r den dramatiska formen var gjorda med s\u00e5 mycken skicklighet och pietet att det var bara tacksamt att ta emot och l\u00e5ta dem g\u00e4lla \u00e4ven p\u00e5 svenska.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Det verkade ett tag som om den ber\u00f6mde Edith Evans skulle ikl\u00e4da sig farmors svarta krusflorskl\u00e4nning p\u00e5 scen. Men planerna gick snart om intet n\u00e4r Storbritannien den 3 september 1939 f\u00f6rklarade krig mot Tyskland. Teatrarna i England bommade igen och d\u00e4refter kom den Bergmanska debuten aldrig p\u00e5 tal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anm\u00e4rkningsv\u00e4rt nog f\u00f6rflyttades pj\u00e4sens premi\u00e4r till Burgtheater i Wien. \u00d6sterrike var vid det laget inf\u00f6rlivat i Adolf Hitlers stortyska rike. G\u00f6teborgs stadsteater och Dramaten i Stockholm slogs om att hinna f\u00f6rst. G\u00f6teborg avgjorde slutligen kappl\u00f6pningen n\u00e4r Wadk\u00f6ping omsider flyttade in i stadsteaterns salonger den 29 november 1940. I rollistan fann man inte ett obekant namn \u2013 framf\u00f6r allt var det den lovordade Tora Teje som fullst\u00e4ndigt oefterh\u00e4rmligt gestaltade den flinth\u00e5rda farmodern. Ribban hade h\u00f6jts \u00e4n en g\u00e5ng. Tejes insats kom att g\u00e5 till teaterhistorien. Regiss\u00f6ren Rune Carlsten hade i sj\u00e4lva verket arrangerat om Dramatens upps\u00e4ttning f\u00f6r radioteatern redan femton \u00e5r tidigare. Nu skulle lyssnarna slutligen f\u00e5 Bergman i Bergmansk tappning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rollistan var n\u00e4ra nog helt omarbetad, men Tora Teje beh\u00f6ll den sj\u00e4lvklara platsen som farmor. Hjalmar Bergman var Ingmar Bergmans egen f\u00f6rebild som ung aspirerande f\u00f6rfattare och det var genom radion Ingmar Bergman f\u00f6rst kom i kontakt med teatern. \u201dJag har alltid \u00e4lskat radioteatern. L\u00e5ngt innan jag fick g\u00e5 p\u00e5 teater s\u00e5 lyssnade jag p\u00e5 radioteatern. Se, Bergman hade ett s\u00e4rskilt geh\u00f6r f\u00f6r Wadk\u00f6pings tong\u00e5ngar. H\u00f6rspelet blev en kolossal succ\u00e9. Men det var inte Bergmans f\u00f6rtj\u00e4nst allena. Herbert Grevenius stod f\u00f6r ytterligare f\u00f6rt\u00e4tning av manuset, och sk\u00e5despelarinsatserna hette duga. Tora Teje hade gjort det igen. Tora Teje hade rentav \u00f6vertr\u00e4ffat sitt eget glansnummer anno 1941.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Och den som f\u00f6rv\u00e4ntade sig Olof Widgren i rollen som Nathan blev heller inte besviken. Eftertr\u00e4daren Gunnar Bj\u00f6rnstrand tog sig an rollen med stor skicklighet.
